Caribbean Dance
Nuestro Mundo Community School 4201 Buckeye Road, Madison, Wisconsin 53716
media release: The Caribbean Association of Madison (CAM) will present a free Caribbean dance workshop on May 29, from 6pm to 8 pm, at Nuestro Mundo Community School, 4201 Buckeye Rd, Madison, WI 53716. Christopher Walker will lead the dance session.
Walker creates contemporary dance, theater, and performance artwork derived from “Resistance Aesthetics,” drawing upon the African diaspora's danced rituals, mas traditions, and performance history. He served as movement director for two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage’s Mlima’s Tale, and he is the recent choreographer for The Secret Life of Bees, The Musical, produced by Atlantic Theatre in NYC.
Walker has collaborated with Laura Anderson Barbata to develop Jus Luv/Rolling Calf, a Jamaican ‘mas’ for her Intervention: Indigo project, which was presented in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in Brooklyn, NY. (2015)
Walker’s concert dance work has been presented in Europe, Asia, and the Americas, receiving numerous international and national grants and honors for his creative research work. He recently completed a Romnes Fellowship, which supported his research on homophobia in the African Diaspora, and in 2020, he was named one of the School of Education’s Impact 2030 Faculty Fellows.
C.A.M. is delighted to welcome dancers and would-be dancers to this exciting free workshop.
