Ceremonial Mural Opening
press release: The Sun Prairie Business Improvement District is thrilled to invite the public to the ceremonial opening of the new Steven Brock mural painted on the side of 245 East Main Street, home to Prairie Flowers & Gifts, facing Downtown Sun Prairie’s public park, Cannery Square. On Wednesday, July 15 at 9:30am the Sun Prairie Business Improvement District Board will hold a ceremony marking the completion of the mural project.
The Business Improvement District instigated this project with several key goals to improve the Downtown Sun Prairie cultural environment including to: showcase the history and culture of Sun Prairie; beautify the public space of Downtown Sun Prairie; attract visitors to view mural artwork; and to be a pilot project for possible future mural works in Downtown Sun Prairie.
Artist Steven Brock has been producing photo-realistic paintings for over 20 years, often on a large scale. A 1987 graduate of Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas, he also studied painting and drawing at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has lived in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin since 1991. The Downtown Sun Prairie mural by Brock depicts several scenes reflecting Sun Prairie life and culture including a portrait of C.H. Bird upon his arrival to area that will become Sun Prairie, the agricultural farms that are the traditional backbone of Sun Prairie’s economic growth and industry, the historic Downtown Sun Prairie Main Street during a representation of one of the many parades in the area, and an homage to Georgia O’Keefe one of Sun Prairie’s most famous citizens. The work compiles these various themes into an elegant scene of flowing prairie fields and joyful citizens capped by a radiant sun burst shining over the city.
