press release: ,Minnesota artist CHARLIE PARR will be in Madison on Friday, October 25 at Majestic Theatre. Charlie’s a cult legend in the indie folk blues scene and has built a loyal following here and overseas for his dynamic resonator guitar and 12-string picking, with fellow musicians among his biggest fans (Phil Cook, Trampled by Turtles, Mandolin Orange, Low, and others). Parr is touring for his eponymous new album, out now in North Americana.
With his haunting, literate narratives dealing with the working class and damaged characters, Parr has updated the classic country blues sound to make it relevant and modern. Recorded at Pachyderm Studio in Canon Falls, Minnesota, CHARLIE PARR includes new songs, revisits out-of-print classics (“Jubilee” and “Cheap Wine”), and pays tribute to two other Minnesota writers, the late Grant Hart (Hüsker Dü) and Spider John Koerner (folk blues legends Koerner, Ray and Glover).
PRAISE FOR CHARLIE PARR:
“…one of today’s leading folk-blues troubadours” — DOWNBEAT
“Parr continues to spin life’s small details into profound lyrical observations of acceptance and wonder….the further adventures of a guitar-picking great” -- Mojo****
“Parr is an example of a performer who never allows his gifts to get in the way of the music. His guitar playing is virtuosic and yet never becomes a distraction from the power of the story he's weaving before our ears.” — Popmatters
"Parr embodies a certain Midwestern disinterest in pretension that allows his music to cut to universal truths and emotions.” - Folk Alley
“Among the contenders in the every burgeoning indie folk, or new folk, genre, there are a lot of pretenders and acts trying desperately to “look and play the part”, but five seconds in front of Charlie Parr and you know you’re dealing with the real thing.” - KEXP
