CPR Training

press release: A group of local emergency responders and health care providers are partnering to provide free hands-only CPR training to 1,000 people in Dane County to represent the approximately 1,000 people who die of sudden cardiac arrest each day in the United States.

“There are 400 people who experience sudden cardiac arrest in Dane County alone each year,” said Dr. Michael Lohmeier, Medical Director, Dane County Emergency Medical Services. “For every minute that passes without CPR, survival rates drop by as much as 10 percent. The more people in our community who are trained and willing to help, the more survivors we will have.”

The free 20-minute trainings will be provided at more than 20 EMS, Fire, and Hospital locations throughout Dane County on Saturday, May 21. Several sites will also be offering alternative dates for training. A full listing of times and locations can be found at CPREvent.eventbrite.com.

Participants will also be encouraged to sign up for PulsePoint, a free mobile app that will alert them when a sudden cardiac arrest occurs in their immediate vicinity, so they can begin chest compressions before EMS arrives. The app recently surpassed the milestone of 10,000 downloads in Dane County.

The CPR training event is a collaborative effort among Dane County EMS agencies, City of Madison Fire Department, UnityPoint Health – Meriter, UW Health and St. Mary’s Hospital.
