Sheriff Walt Longmire of Absaroka County, Wyoming, must solve his coldest case yet when a T. rex fossil turns up alongside a dead rancher. DRY BONES, by New York Times bestselling author Craig Johnson, is the 13th in the mystery series which inspired the hit TV show Longmire, soon to be on Netflix for its upcoming fourth season.
“Jen”—nick-named after the paleontologist who discovered her—is the largest and most complete T. rex skeleton ever to be discovered. Sheriff Longmire doesn’t think too much of it until Danny Lone Elk, the Cheyenne rancher who lays claim to the fossil, is found dead and floating in a turtle pond, and Walt finds himself caught in the middle of an ownership dispute involving the deceased man’s family, the Cheyenne tribe, Wyoming’s acting Deputy U.S. Attorney, and the FBI.
As things begin to heat up with the sixty-six-million-year-old cold case, Walt must also grapple with a shocking tragedy that leaves his daughter heartbroken. At a loss when it comes to comforting his daughter and newborn granddaughter, Walt’s longtime friend Henry Standing Bear steps in to lend a hand.
Meanwhile, residents of Absaroka County are determined to “save Jen” from those who want to remove the dinosaur from her Wyoming home. With the priceless fossil locked up in his holding cell, Sheriff Longmire must get to the bottom of Danny Lone Elk’s death in order to determine where rightful ownership lies. Toxic Cheyenne artifacts, illegal prescription drugs, and missing film footage all come into play as Walt and his undersheriff, Victoria Moretti, try their best to “save Jen.”
