Dane County Land and Water Resources Department Meeting

media release: Dane County is seeking public comment on proposed ordinance amendments to Chapter 71: Regulation of Icebound Inland Waters. This ordinance is intended to promote the public safety on the icebound (frozen) lakes in Dane County.  Regardless of ordinance language, the risk of travel on frozen water is held by the traveler.   

The existing ordinance includes language regarding icebound lakes and the prohibition of cars and trucks, weight limit and floatation requirements for all-terrain vehicles (or similar recreational vehicles), regulation of airboats and hoverboats, parking at public facilities, and docking at piers, mooring buoys and rafts.  

“These proposed changes respond to public requests for clear and consistent standards for the use and enjoyment of our incredible lakes,” said Dane County Executive Melissa Agard. “I encourage Dane County residents to review the proposal and share their input as we work to balance access and safety.” 

Proposed changes include:  

• the allowance for registered recreational vehicles (ATVs, UTVs, off-highway motorcycles, and snowmobiles) 
• the removal of weight restrictions and floatation requirements 
• a requirement to wear personal floatation devices while operating or riding in vehicles on icebound waters 
• consistency across all icebound waters of Dane County 

A public informational meeting for individuals that wish to learn more and provide comments will be held on Wednesday, March 4, from 5:30 pm – 6:30 pm at the Lyman F. Anderson Agriculture & Conservation Center, 5201 Fen Oak Drive, Madison, WI 53718.   

Written comments are also being accepted online through March 9t
