Darren Sterud Orchestra featuring Tim Whalen
Brink Lounge 701 E. Washington Ave., Suite 105, Madison, Wisconsin 53703
Darren Sterud Orchestra
Scheduling issues for the 31st annual festival required a change of dates, and organizers seized the opportunity to expand the former two-day event into a 10-day extravaganza with 27 different performances and events at various locations throughout Madison. This year’s focus will be on local and regional acts. There are a number of acts on the Memorial Union Terrace, a State Street “jazz stroll,” a concert highlighting jazz’s gospel roots, and another honoring women’s contributions to the genre. There’s also a world premiere from saxophonist Hanah Jon Taylor, Songs for the Emerging Man. Details: isthmusjazzfestival.com.
The Brink Lounge presents Darren Sterud Orchestra with special guest Tim Whalen, performing Whalen’s arrangements for the famed U.S. Army Band.
Bio: This event brings together two regular participants in the festival over the past 20 years. Tim Whalen has appeared with his own groups the Tim Whalen Nonet, Tribute to Art Blakey and Tim Whalen Quintet, as well as with the New Breed Quintet, which hosts its weekly jam at North Street Cabaret. Darren Sterud has been participating, almost annually, in the Isthmus Jazz Fest, starting with the high school all stars in 2001. He’s appeared with Mama Digdown’s Brass Band, Tony Castañeda, Johannes Wallmann, Grupo Candela and his Orchestra over the past 18 years. The combination of this band and Whalen brings together a long tradition of jazz in the Madison Community.
The Darren Sterud Orchestra joins many of Madison’s finest young jazz musicians with several outstanding veteran players. It debuted in February 2013 and has enjoyed residencies at The Fountain on State Street and the Cardinal Bar on East Wilson, as well as performances at Jazz at Five and the Isthmus Jazz Festival. In each of the past two years, the DSO has presented complete performances of the classic Ellington-Strayhorn arrangement of Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker Suite.”
Tickets are $10 in advance, or $15 at the door; student tickets are $5.
