media release: Certified multi-platinum folk pop singer and songwriter David Kushner announces his debut album The Dichotomy, arriving August 30 via Miserable Music Group. In addition to the long-awaited album announcement, Kushner releases his new single and video from the album: “Humankind.”
The new video reflects the frightening capacity for humans to be cruel to each other with images of ominous cavernous spaces, mysterious dark figures, and militant scenes of the blind leading the blind. “Humankind just lets me down,” sings Kushner as he flickers between the dark human world inside and the solemn clarity of the outdoors. But even as he laments these fundamental human struggles, Kushner’s powerful vocals never sound defeated. Instead, he conveys a message of unity and empathy, reminding us that regardless of our roles or perceived power we share a common journey through life's challenges. Full of raw emotion and insightful lyricism, “Humankind” leads us into the world of The Dichotomy.
On the album, Kushner shares: “This project has been a long time coming and I'm excited I finally get to share it with all of you. I wanted to depict humankind's struggle between light and darkness. It's something that all of us feel in our own way, and certainly something I feel daily. I want people to understand that there are always two sides to everything, with two forces at play. Recognizing this reality is the first step towards finding true purpose in the struggle.”
Fans can pre-order an exclusive gatefold vinyl of The Dichotomy and three exclusive box sets with signed CDs only at the official David Kushner webstore.
Today Kushner also unveils five more stops on the Dichotomy Tour: Portland (Maine), New Haven, Boston, Nashville, and Birmingham. On the tour, Kushner will play across the US and Canada beginning September 9 in Portland, OR and finishing November 23 in Oakland, CA. Before the North American Dichotomy Tour, Kushner will continue a summer of festival appearances that has included Hangout, Boston Calling, and Bonnaroo so far. In August, he will hit the European festival circuit with a slate of shows that includes the iconic Reading and Leeds festivals in the UK. Originally from the suburbs of Chicago and currently based in Los Angeles, Kushner first made waves in 2022 with a pair of worldwide hit singles, “Miserable Man” (hailed by Rolling Stone as “an acoustic ballad that’s as sparse as a one-horse town”) and “Mr. Forgettable,” both found on his debut EP, Footprints I Found. His emotionally charged songs touched an immediate chord in listeners around the globe, earning featured placement on the coveted Spotify “Roots Rising” playlist while quickly racking up more than 700M streams in under one year. When the long-teased single “Daylight” finally dropped, Kushner’s career kicked into an even higher gear. The certified-platinum song has been streamed over 1.5 billion times and counting and has over 1 billion streams on Spotify alone and launched David’s extremely successful Daylight Tour and Daylight Tour 2.0.
