David Maraniss
Central Library 201 W. Mifflin St., Madison, Wisconsin 53703
No stranger to these parts, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist David Maraniss returns to Madison to promote his 12th book, a poignant new memoir titled A Good American Family: The Red Scare and My Father. As a chronicler of the American experience through the eyes of such figures as Barack Obama and Vince Lombardi, Maraniss now turns the focus on his own family. In 1952, an undercover FBI informant identified Maraniss’ father, Elliott, as a Communist, and now the author sets out to better understand what happened. The family moved to Madison in 1957, and Maraniss called the book “a love story to Madison” in a recent Isthmus cover feature. “After all that turmoil, it saved our lives.”
