In the cloistered, sinister atmosphere of a schoolmaster's adulterous household - almost suffocating with eroticism and evil - an elaborate murder plot, involving madness and the supernatural, uncoils relentlessly - until death is finally palpable, the screams caught in the throat, the shadows descending. This is one of the great Grand Guignol shockers, written and directed by suspense maestro Henri-Georges Clouzot (The Wages Of Fear) and starring his wife, Vera.  It works on your nerves with an infernal assurance and attack; many reviewers in 1955 thought it superior to the best of Hitchcock.
