Discovering a Different Germany: One American Jew’s Surprising Story
UW Hillel/Barbara Hochberg Center for Jewish Student Life 611 Langdon St., Madison, Wisconsin 53703
On October 21, 2015, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Hillel will welcome Dr. Judith Levi as she gives an informative lecture about Jewish life in contemporary Germany. Levi was recently awarded the Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for her “exceptional achievements in promoting reconciliation between the German and Jewish peoples.” In her book, Reconciliation Odyssey: A Jew Discovers a Different Germany, she describes the surprising and stereotype-shattering discoveries she has made on 12 trips to Germany since 1998 in regard to Germans’ efforts to come to terms with their country’s Nazi past. The UW Hillel Foundation, Center for German and European Studies, and Department of German are excited for Levi’s discussion about how Russians, Israelis, Europeans, and other Jews are building and recreating the Jewish community in Germany. From personal and professional experiences, Levi will discuss and address misconceptions about reconciliation, and the lively, thriving Jewish culture in modern Germany.
