Dancing in the street: Raise awareness about mental illness in minority communities by participating in the second annual Diversity in Motion Flash Mob with NAMI Wisconsin. To be a dancer, RSVP to NAMI’s Facebook event and learn the routine on YouTube. Or if you’d rather be a spectator, stop by and watch the fun.
from the Facebook event page:
In honor of Bebe Moore Campbell's National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month in July, NAMI Wisconsin is partnering with Alpha Kappa Alpha and organizing a cultural dance flash mob on Saturday, July 18 during the Farmer's Market on the Capitol Square. ANYONE can join this group and participate--the more the merrier! (That said, I left out the word "flash mob" in the event title so people cannot just search for this...)
Our mob will spontaneously combust during the peak of unsuspecting Farmer's Market and Maxwell Street Days attendees. The dance will only last 3-4 minutes and will be done to the classic song, "Dancing in the Street". We will also be available after the dance to offer resources and information to anybody who wants it.
If you'd like to dance with us, here's what to do:
1. RSVP here. Invite your friends. (We will be ordering green t-shirts so we can all look the same so please make sure to join this event so we can keep a reasonable tally.)
2. Watch our private YouTube video to listen/learn the dance we will perform! (Yet to come....)
OR YOU CAN
3. Attend any one of these rehearsals to practice the dance:
-Tuesday July 14th at 5:30PM at Kanopy Dance Studio
-Thursday July 16th at 7PM at Kanopy Dance Studio
4. Show up on July 18 between 9:45-10:45 am at the NAMI Dane County booth located on King St and Main St by the Colonel Heg statue to get your t-shirt (or if you cannot make it, please wear green)
-Please note, we would like to have you wear something to cover up your green so as not to draw attention until the dance starts and you can reveal the green shirt (and all of your moves)!
5. Show up at the top of State Street at 10:50 and be ready to release your inner dance at 10:55!
We hope to make this flash mob successful but we need your help to spread the word! The more dancers, the better. Video cameras will be there to tape the entire thing, and the local broadcast media will be alerted, so this will be big!
It's time to further the conversation around mental health! Let's do this!
