media release: On April 8, LA-based Sudanese-American artist Dua Saleh released their new single “Cállate,” taken from their forthcoming record Of Earth & Wires, out on May 15 via Ghostly International.
The rhythmic "Cállate" darts between shuffling beats and a baile-like groove as the elastic vocalist lands a mix of feathery coos and pointed blows. “Cállate is about two lovers that the ‘Of Earth & Wires’ album follows,” explains Dua Saleh, “They’re surviving on a post-apocalyptic Earth. They feel rising tension as they reflect on the chaotic material environment surrounding them. Sometimes—in high-stress situations—lovers can crash out, but these two twin flames always find their way back home.”
“Cállate” follows the previously released “I Do, I Do,” which Nylon called “a beautiful, romantic, enchanting and spiritual listening experience all in one,” as well as the Bon Iver-featured tracks “Flood” and “Glow.”
Dua Saleh has also announced the Of Earth & Wires Tour, with North American dates kicking off in September and including stops in Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, Boston, New York, Toronto, Chicago, Seattle, Los Angeles and more. All dates can be found below and tickets are on sale here: duasaleh.com/tour
Of Earth & Wires is the latest in a series of projects Saleh has visualized over the coming years — vast ambition drives their project, and at times presents its most practical challenge: how to rein in overflowing ideas. Enter the guidance of friends, most of whom have Midwest roots. Iowa-born Billy Lemos, whose playful production style brings the best out of Saleh. Justin Vernon, aka Bon Iver, the Grammy-winning indie star and pride of Eau Claire, has worked with Saleh on several projects, including Travis Scott’s UTOPIA. With their encouragement, joined by collaborator Ryan Olson and several other Minnesota-based producers and musicians, Saleh approached sessions without expectations; there were no outlined objectives or intentions that any recordings would all appear on an album by any artist involved.
Across Of Earth & Wires, Saleh leans into a sonic duality: warm, melodic arrangements that feel instinctive and human, set against moments of wild, manufactured distortion, tracing a fragile line between connection and dislocation. Of Earth & Wires is available for pre-order on CD, vinyl and digitally here: https://ghostly.lnk.to/dua-saleh-of-earth-and-wires.
