Gavin Lawrence and Karen Aldridge in the American Players Theatre production of August Wilson's "Fences."
Born in the Hill District of Pittsburgh, August Wilson returned to that city and its history over and over again, as he wrote his 10-play cycle chronicling the lives of people of color in the twentieth century. Influenced by jazz, Malcolm X and the Black Power movement, Wilson created his Pulitzer- and Tony-winning Fences as a snapshot of a tarnished American dream the 1950s. At the center of the drama is Troy Maxson, a fiercely proud man who lashes out at injustice, and hurts everyone who loves him in the process. Featuring core company member Gavin Lawrence, the play is directed by Ron OJ Parson.
In repertory, Aug. 2-Sept. 28.
