You might remember The Story of Ferdinand from your picture book days. The indelible tale from Munro Leaf tells the story of a bull, Ferdinand, who is bred to fight in the ring but shies away from such conflict, just wanting to smell the flowers. The story about remaining true to your inner wishes is just as relevant now as when the book was first published in 1936. This stage adaptation features live storytelling in Spanish and English as well as danced performance scenes. The producers, Beatrix Productions, state they have crafted the show for “all ages” and that no violence toward Ferdinand will be shown on stage “but the threat of violence toward him is implied in story and movement.”
media release: A modern adaptation of the classic children’s tale, The Story of Ferdinand, by Munro Leaf. A quiet young bull who just wants to smell the meadow flowers catches the eye of a scouting bullfighter, and finds himself in the arena. As the young bull faces pressure to be different than he is, he strives to discover who he truly wants to be, within a world that may hold dangers for him. Originally set during the rise of Spanish fascism, this show features live storytelling in Spanish and English by Martin Alvarado as Narrator, with danced performance scenes from Tania Tandias, Raka Bandyo, Christopher Coffman, Michael Tredupp, and Amy Owen.

While this show is carefully crafted to be appropriate for all ages, it contains themes that families may want to use discretion about based on the needs and sensitivities of individual children. Violence toward the main character will not be depicted on stage (Ferdinand will never be poked or stabbed with a sword in any scene), but the threat of violence toward him is implied in story and movement. Ferdinand will depict pain and distress from a bee sting in his movements on stage.
