Moving the Needle is a retrospective exhibition celebrating four decades of quilt making by Gigi Mosconi. Spanning work from her earliest meticulously composed pieces to her recent improvisational quilts, the exhibition reveals the evolution of an artist whose practice has continually balanced structure with spontaneity. Rich in color, texture, and thoughtfully considered composition, Mosconi's quilts reflect a deep engagement with material, process, and the expressive possibilities of cloth.
As her work has evolved, quilting has become a means of exploring memory, resilience, and personal transformation. Through intuitive piecing, slow stitching, and an embrace of imperfection, Mosconi creates quilts that invite quiet reflection while demonstrating the enduring power of making. Together, these works offer an intimate portrait of an artist whose creative practice has unfolded over four decades.
"Curating this exhibition gave me the rare opportunity to see more than 100 quilts made by Gigi Mosconi spanning four decades of making. I was struck not only by the remarkable scope of her practice and her unwavering commitment to making, but also by the way she continually expanded her artistic vocabulary, moving from traditional quilt blocks to improvisation, abstraction, and deeply personal narrative without ever losing sight of the craftsmanship that grounds her work. Together, these quilts tell more than the story of an accomplished artist. They offer a moving portrait of a woman who continues to grow, adapt, and discover herself through the act of making." - Heather Kohlmeier, artistic director, Textile Arts Center of Madison
