Grandma's Boy

press release: Duck Soup Cinema, Overture Center’s silent film series that celebrates the heritage of the Capitol Theater, completes its season on Saturday, April 13 with two screenings of Grandma’s Boy at 2 and 7 p.m. Organist Zach Frame, from Lake Geneva, Wis., will make his Duck Soup Cinema accompanist debut for this screening.

This 1922 silent comedy stars Harold Lloyd; Mildred Davis and Anna Townsend co-star. With advice from his feisty grandma, a timid man learns to be brave. Originally intended to be a serious film, star Harold Lloyd turned it on its head, making it a comedy by adding several gag scenes. The $10 suit worn by Lloyd in the film would cost about $150 now. The film was among the most popular in 1922.

Duck Soup Cinema is nationally known for providing an authentic silent film experience in the historic Capitol Theater, which celebrated its 90th anniversary in January 2018. Film showings include vaudeville entertainment with an emcee, door prizes and a classic feature film with live organ accompaniment.

For over 30 years, Overture has revived and celebrated the heritage and legacy of Capitol Theater, originally built for silent film and opened in 1928. The two series, ‘Sounds of Silents’ (1986-1998) and ‘Duck Soup Cinema’ (1999-present), have engaged patrons in nearly 95,000 silent film experiences.
