Aug. 15: Native Companion Planting: Companion planting is at the center of any good organic gardening plan. Join us at Taliesin to learn how to harness the power of companion planting with native plants to create a happier and healthier garden!
Native plants are an integral part of a healthy ecosystem, but they can also play an important role in a healthy garden! Kitchen Gardener, Abbie Lehman, will share her experience companion planting with native plants in the Kitchen Garden at Taliesin. Learn companion planting methods and benefits, as well as common garden companions. Discover native plants in our area, why they are important, the benefits they can provide to you and your garden, and how to incorporate them. Participants will make and take home a botanical print of their favorite native plant in the Kitchen Garden!
Aug. 22: Eat the Weeds: Tired of fighting all those garden weeds? Good news - you can eat them! Join us in the Kitchen Garden at Taliesin to learn what weeds in your garden are delicious and nutritious. Learn about companion planting and how some weeds can actually benefit your garden when managed properly.
We will also discuss the importance of understanding native vs invasive weeds, and how our gardening affects the greater ecosystem. Participants will tour the Kitchen Garden at Taliesin and have the opportunity to sample the weeds and the garden produce.
Sept. 26: Explore Phoebe Point Trail and learn how to forage with our Kitchen Gardener, Abbie Lehman. This class will begin by discussing foraging basics at the base of the trail. Then, we will embark on a moderate 1.1 mile loop through Phoebe Point to put our new knowledge to the test, identifying common summer wild edibles along the way.
Oct. 10: Seed Saving: Visit the Kitchen Garden at Taliesin to discover the importance and magic of saving seeds, both in the garden and in the wild! Learn about climate zones, as well as plant taxonomy, life cycles, pollination, and propagation to better understand how to save your seeds. Study seed anatomy and distinguish different seed types based on selective pollination. Walk away feeling confident in your new knowledge with additional resources, as well as important considerations for next steps in your seeds’ journeys to germination. By the end of this course, you'll be ready to properly gather, process, store, and even eat your seeds!
By the end of this course, you will learn why you should forage, where you can forage, how to forage safely and responsibly, as well as key identification techniques and common plant families.
