The Handphibians during a past Carnaval performance.

During the last two decades-plus, The Handphibians have become a Madison institution, bringing the joyful sounds of Brazilian percussion music to local audiences. The group annually marks the pre-Lent celebration of Carnaval in Brazil with a concert featuring music, dance and more. This year's lineup includes The Handphibians (currently 40 drummers strong) along with Forró Fo Sho, Grupo Balança, Los Chechos and Ótimo Dance.

media release: The Handphibians present a drum and dance-filled celebration of Brazilian music with Madison Carnaval 2022! The evening will include original compositions and choreographies, along with some of Brazil’s most famous Carnaval music. Featured artists include The Handphibians, Ótimo Dance, Grupo Balança, Forró Fo Sho, Los Chechos, capoeira martial arts, and more.

About the Handphibians: The Handphibians are a Brazilian percussion group of community musicians from Madison, Wisconsin. Their music is modeled after the Escolas de Samba in Rio de Janeiro, Blocos Afros of Salvador, and the Maracatu Naçãoes of Recife. The Handphibians are proud to be celebrating their 23rd year as an organization. Over the decades the ensemble has grown from five founding members to its current 40 drummers!
