A trio on stage.
Free Dirt
This lineup of Madison bands is the perfect way to beckon in the summer. The music of Heavy Looks plays on themes of love, loss and loneliness (their name is inspired by Shakespeare, after all) with music that blends pop and rock. The Earthlings is a space rock music collective creating a meld of alt-rock and electronic music for an out-of-this-world sound that is all their own. Free Dirt is a rock trio with enigmatic themes and lyrics.

Heavy Looks is a dynamic power pop rock band based out of Madison, WI. Named after a Romeo and Juliet quote, Heavy Looks’ lyrics connect with the same forlorn feelings as the famous Shakespeare play evokes – feelings of love, feelings of loss, and feeling stuck in a mundane existence. By contrast, the melodies and rhythms conjure an optimistic outlook with hook-laden guitar lines and jaunty drumbeats. Melding Dirk's pop sensibilities and bright guitar with Roz's raw vocals and grunge riffs, they form a unique flavor of indie rock that packs heat.
In 2014, the band released their debut EP, Senses Growing Dull, and made their presence known in the Madison music scene. They have shared stages with national acts including Curtis Harding, Gin Blossoms, Screaming Females, Slothrust, Tacocat, Summer Cannibals, Sweet Spirit, Jessica Hernandez & the Deltas, and Bad Bad Hats.
Live, the band's an energetic force, trading vocal leads with ease and tapping into something that feels genuinely powerful. In December 2015, the band released their first full-length album, Waste It Right. After a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the band regrouped with Tricia DiPiazza on bass and Jess Nowaczyk on drums. They released their third album, Apathy, in August 2022.
The Earthlings: Madison’s favorite space rock music collective that brings eras of electronic sonic rock together with a laid back psychedelic indie emphasis, euphoric space, and positive vibrations.
Free Dirt
Free Dirt writes sturdy, dependable, sometimes funny songs that ring familiar while also feeling a bit tough to pin down. On stage they take those songs, pull them apart and use the bricks to fashion a wobbling Tower of Babel. Come and see how close they get to heaven before it all tumbles back down to earth!
