press release: The Making and Meaning of Dear Delia-The Civil War Letters of Captain Henry F. Young, Seventh Wisconsin Infantry
Join Micheal J. Larson, social studies instructor, School District of Menomonie Area, and John David Smith, Charles H. Stone Distinguished Professor of American History, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, to discuss how their recent book Dear Delia, published by the University of Wisconsin Press, came into being and why this edition is an important contribution to Civil War and Wisconsin history. "Dear Delia" includes 155 letters, introduced and annotated, from Young, a junior officer in the Iron Brigade, to his wife and father-in-law. They span the period August 31, 1861, to November 27, 1864. The letters document the day-to-day life of a devoted husband, son-in-law, and patriot in a bloody, internecine war. Young was willing to sacrifice his life and his family's security in order to suppress the Confederates' insurrection and to render the Union a free country in word as well as in deed.
