Music and dance, musicians and dancers are inseparable in the centuries-old folk tradition of Mexico's Veracruz region, Son Jarocho. The performances include elements of a fandango, a traditional community gathering and will introduce the audience to the blending of Indigenous, Spanish, African and Arabic cultures that is Son Jarocho.
7pm - Madison's Jaraner@ Community is a group of friends and activists that have come together sharing their passion for music, cultural autonomy, movement and community. They use poetry, dance and music to empower and resist against ideology that is set to suppress differences.
7:30pm JaroChican@s is a multi-generational collective from Chicago. Since 2008, Jarochican@s have been developing their musical identity through organizing and supporting events and education for learning Son Jarocho and the practices of fandango - traditional community gatherings.
Followed by both groups together, with audience.
Free International Education Week Event at Edgewood College, Monroe Street Campus. These events are produced through a broad collaboration that includes the School of Education, TESOL Program, COR Program, School of Integrative Studies, Music Department, English as a Second Language Program, Center for Multicultural Education, Office of Student Activities and the Center for Global Education, with the support of an Educational Programming Board grant.
