This exhibition presents photos and accompanying captions drawn from a Roots4Change Coop project documenting the experiences of Latina and Indigenous women through the birth process and afterwards. “Jardines de Espacios” aims to raise awareness of and spark action in response to issues faced by mothers, including rising preterm birth rates and a lack of postpartum care. Opening (1-5 p.m., Sept. 12) and closing (noon-4 p.m., Sept. 19) receptions feature a talk about the project, and childcare is available with an RSVP at jardines.roots4change.coop, where you can also find information on related events.
media release: Jardines de Espacios is a community-based photovoice project and the first Latina-to-Latina exhibit centered on perinatal experiences, created through a decolonizing process led by immigrant Latina, Latina, and Indigenous women, alongside mothers and providers.
In Dane County, Latina birthing people face the lowest postpartum visit attendance of any group, and preterm birth rates among Latino babies have risen sharply. Their photos and stories are an act of resistance, built to spark awareness and action. We'll be hosting a series of events from September 12 to September 19 across Dane County.
We would love for you to join us. Whether you come to one event or all of them, your presence helps build the awareness and collective action this work calls for. See below to the full lineup, and please share with anyone in your networks who might want to be there too.
