More Clyde news:
A movement is gaining momentum to honor the late, legendary drummer Clyde Stubblefield with induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. A newly launched petition calls for Stubblefield to receive the prestigious Musical Excellence Award, recognizing his immense influence on contemporary music.
The push for Stubblefield’s induction is bolstered by video testimonials from some of the biggest names in the music industry, including Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, Bootsy Collins, and Anderson .Paak, which has amassed 172k views on Instagram. These interviews are part of an upcoming documentary about Stubblefield’s life and influence. The petition and documentary are spearheaded by director and producer Trevor Banks, who is leading the call for Stubblefield’s long-overdue recognition.
A Drummer Who Defined Generations
Clyde Stubblefield revolutionized drumming with his unique syncopated rhythms, leaving an indelible mark on music history. Best known for his work with James Brown (1965-1971), Stubblefield’s beats powered timeless classics such as Cold Sweat, Funky Drummer, I Got The Feelin’, Mother Popcorn, Say It Loud – I’m Black and I’m Proud, and Give It Up or Turnit a Loose. His innovative drumming was pivotal in shaping funk music and later became one of the most sampled sounds in history, forming the backbone of hip-hop while also influencing pop and electronic dance music.
Stubblefield’s rhythms have been used by artists across genres, including Public Enemy, Prince, Britney Spears, LL Cool J, Ed Sheeran, Beastie Boys, Kenny G, Dr. Dre, Alanis Morissette, and Aphex Twin. His influence is undeniable, yet he remains absent from the Rock Hall’s distinguished roster—a gap that music enthusiasts and industry leaders hope to correct.
“Clyde Stubblefield is one of the master architects of contemporary popular American music,” says Trevor Banks. “He embodies everything the Rock Hall represents: originality, influence, and impact. I’m hard-pressed to find anyone more deserving of this honor than Clyde Stubblefield.”
