Joan Shelley, The Other Years

Joan Shelley
press release: Bearing up the soul of the south with her clear, melodic voice, Kentucky native Joan Shelley delivers a heart-rending fourth album, Joan Shelley. The self-titled release has been called, “Exquisitely hushed,” by Rolling Stone and “A great big warm hug of a record,” by The 405.
Writes Alasdair Lees of The Independent, “What’s so appealing about the new album is the close spell it casts. Laced with vulnerability and self-doubt, Shelley’s crystal-clear voice meditates on the spaces between people, in arrangements that evoke Bacharach and David and African blues influences as much as acid-folk.”
Recorded in just five days with Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy (producer, bass, electric guitar) and accompanied by Nathan Salsburg (acoustic and electric guitar), Spencer Tweedy (drums), and James Elkington (piano and resonator guitar), Joan Shelley brims with a searching truth made evident.
When asked by Lees if the songs are love songs, Shelley replies, “They are love songs, but not necessarily always desirous love, but like I’m really trying to talk to someone but there are so many things in the way. Trying to have what I think of some kind of spiritual love.”
Joan Shelley brings her songs to the STOUGHTON OPERA HOUSE stage on Thursday, April 26 at 7:30 pm
