press release: NYC-based composer, bassist and bandleader Max Johnson visits the Midwest for a series of concerts with Milwaukee’s Russ Johnson on trumpet and Chicago drummer Tim Daisy. The trio will perform at Arts + Literature Laboratory on Saturday, November 5 at 8:30pm. (Doors open at 8pm.) Tickets are $10, available in advance online or at the door.
Currently residing in Brooklyn, New York, Max has performed with renowned musicians such as Anthony Braxton, Muhal Richard Abrams, John Zorn, and Candido Camero, playing over 1000 concerts in North America in Europe in the past 5 years. His 6 albums have been reviewed in the New York Times, JazzTimes, NYC Jazz Record, and as a result, Johnson was voted No.2 Bassist of the Year and No. 5 Musician of the Year in El Intruso's International Critics Poll.
Trumpeter Russ Johnson is a recent Midwest transplant after spending 23 years as an important member of New York City’s jazz community. He has 7 recordings as a leader or co-leader and performed on more than 75 recordings as a sideman. Russ has worked alongside many of the legendary figures in jazz including Lee Konitz, Steve Swallow, Bill Frisell, and Joe Lovano. In addition, he has recorded and/or performed with a long list of the most prominent musicians currently on the international jazz scene, including Myra Melford, Ken Vandermark, and Tony Malaby. Russ has performed in more than 40 countries across the globe. His most recent recordings, "Meeting Point" and "Still Out To Lunch" received 4 1/2 & 4 stars respectively from Down Beat Magazine and appeared on many "Best Recordings of 2014" lists. Russ currently serves as Director of Jazz Studies at the University of Wisconsin Parkside.
Chicago – based drummer, marimbist and composer Tim Daisy has worked in the fields of improvised and composed music since 1997. He has performed, recorded, and toured with many acclaimed musicians and ensembles from both the North American and European improvised music scenes including: Mars Williams, Ken Vandermark, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Elisabeth Harnik, Dave Rempis, James Falzone, Russ Johnson, Havard Wiik, Mikolaj Trzaska, Clayton Thomas, Per Ake Holmlander, Steve Swell, Aram Shelton, Michael Zerang, Kyle Bruckmann, and Katherine Young.
Tim organizes tours and composes music for three of his own ensembles including: the chamber music trio Vox Arcana with James Falzone on clarinet and Fred Lonberg -Holm on cello, Trio Red Space with Mars Williams on reeds and Jeb Bishop on trombone, and The Steel Bridge Trio with Aram Shelton on reeds and Safa Shokrai on bass.
Tim has performed and recorded original music for modern dance, film, and improvised music ensembles of various configurations. He also owns and operates Relay Records, documenting much of the creative work he has been involved with in Chicago and abroad since 2011. Tim co -curates the weekly OPTION series at Experimental Sound Studio in Chicago. The programming explores contemporary perspectives on improvisation and composition in a ‘salon’ format, enabling local, national, and international artists to publicly discuss their practice and ideas as well as perform
