Up-and-coming Chicago vocalist, arranger, educator, and composer Julia Smulson takes the genre of what is known as jazz to new capacities by adding her own flavor of soul. Julia has a strong background in classical training as she grew up in the traveling and nationally competing Campanella Children’s Choir, as well as privately studying with Northwestern University Voice and Opera professor, Theresa Brancaccio. Julia is also an alum of the Chicago a Cappella: High School Apprenticeship Program from 2018-2019. Julia has been announced as the 2022 International Ella Fitzgerald Jazz Vocal Competition Winner where, for part of her prize, she performed with the Tierney Sutton Band at the infamous Blues Alley Jazz Club.
Garrett Munz is a young alto and tenor saxophonist in Chicago, playing a large range of styles including indie pop, funk, and “jazz”. Aside from playing with a myriad of other young musicians in Chicago, he leads his own group that showcases original music and aims to define a new sense of modern music. On top of saxophone, he often plays piano, where he regularly experiments with compositional ideas.
Alvin Santner is a guitarist, composer, and educator living and working in the Chicagoland area. He got his start in jazz in his high school’s big band, studying with legendary Chicago guitarist and pedagogue Frank Portolese, and gigging at restaurants in the north suburbs. Alvin is currently an undergraduate at DePaul University, pursuing a degree in Jazz Studies. He has studied under the expert mentorship of Bob Palmieri, Bob Lark, and Julian Lage. Alvin has performed in venues throughout the Chicagoland area, such as the Jazz Showcase, Andy’s Jazz Club, Elastic Arts, Fulton Street Collective.
Native Chicagoan, Leo Buczkowski, specializes in upright and electric bass. He loves to incorporate many styles of music into his playing and dip his toes into uncharted territory. Leo has been playing his hand at composing and producing recently at beloved Chicago venues such as Andy’s Jazz Club, City Winery Chicago, Constellation Chicago, Elastic Arts and the Fulton Street Collective.
Alejandro Salazar is rising star here in Chicago playing at clubs, venues and festivals like The Chicago Jazz Festival, The Jazz Showcase, Andy’s Jazz Club, The Hungry Brain, Constellation and Fulton Street Collective with some master musicians such as Jon Faddis, Robert Irving III, Emmet Cohen, Willie Pickens, Victor Garcia, Ernest Dawkins, Senabella Gill, Marques Carroll, John Fournier, Ira Sullivan, and many more.
