Office of Multicultural Arts Initiatives (OMAI) - Visiting Artist Creative Workshop. Drop in this Saturday for a workshop by Kavi Ade. Kavindu “Kavi” Ade is a writer, activist, arts educator, and nationally recognized spoken word poet. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Afro-Caribbean immigrants their poetry is a dance between cultures. While best known for performing their gender identity poem entitled “IT” in 2010, Kavi’s work centers on the navigation of intersecting identities - seeking to explore what it means to be Black, Afro-Caribbean, transgender, queer, poor, and first generation American all at once. Through their poetry the world unfolds itself into moments of cruelty, but also beauty, wonder, and becoming. This is a monthly series with a different artist each month. No registration required. This project is made possible by a grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services.
