"Make a Move" by Lawrence
Of the video, lead singer/songwriter Gracie Lawrence says, “As a twenty-one year old girl, I’m told that being forward isn’t attractive. I’m told that if I casually ask a guy out, I’m being aggressive or boy-crazy. But I’m sick of being told that I have to wait around to be ‘chosen.’ Am I supposed to post a picture on instagram that he probably will never see? Include a cryptic message for him in the caption that he’ll probably never get? Doesn’t THAT seem way more aggressive and boy-crazy!? So, I decided to get over my fear of being seen as overbearing. Because being passive is somehow both boring and time-consuming. And because I’d rather be honest about what I want than disappointed because I never even tried. Writing this song and making this video are reminders to myself and any other womxn who need it that if we want to ‘make a move,’ romantically or otherwise, we’re allowed.”
Living Room—co-produced by Jordan Cohen (tenor/baritone sax), Jonny Koh (guitar), Eli Crews, Clyde Lawrence and Gracie Lawrence—chronicles the life of two kids growing up, coping with break-ups, make-ups, family loss and finding harmony between excitement, anxiety, melancholy and empowerment.
Of the album, Lawrence says “We wrote Living Room over the course of the past two years in our family’s living room. It’s important to us that when you hear the songs we write, you feel like you are getting to know us as people. In short, this album is about growing up, and everything that comes with it. So each song is a little window into a moment in our lives, whether that be a fight we had with a loved one, a night of insomnia, or a bite of spicy food that we weren’t prepared for.”
