press release: During the final winter of the Civil War, more than 3,000 Union prisoners of war escaped from make-shift prisons in the Carolinas.  Slaves and deserters from the Confederate army aided them on their journey back to Union lines.  Their story sheds new light on what really happened inside the Confederacy during its final months.
