Known for her confessional lyrics and heavenly, haunting voice, Lucy Dacus has followed up her critically acclaimed 2018 album, Historian, with a string of singles coinciding with 2019 holidays. Her most recent is a cover of Bruce Springteen’s “Dancing in the Dark,” released in celebration of Springsteen’s 70th birthday. Others include “My Mother and I” for Mother’s Day and “Forever Half Mast” for Independence Day. Perhaps at this show she’ll debut a Halloween jam. Only one way to find out. With Liza Anne, Sun June.

press release: Richmond, Virginia, artist Lucy Dacus is playing Majestic Theatre on 10/11! Her sophomore album, Historian, came out last year on Matador Records and is one of the most unanimously lauded ‘Best Albums of 2018’ across a wide spectrum of press outlets — and she was also 1/3rd of the supergroup boygenius, along with Phoebe Bridgers and Julien Baker.
Lucy hasn’t slowed down after her standout 2018 — she has been releasing her 2019 holiday song series throughout the year on holidays like Christmas and Bruce Springsteen’s birthday. The Valentine’s Day one came out in February, with her covering “La Vie En Rose” - http://mat-r.co/lavieenrose, the Mother’s Day one, an original song called “My Mother & I”, came out in May - https://lucydacus.ffm.to/
This past July she taped an episode of Austin City Limits TV that will air this fall on PBS, and you can also check out this op-ed published in The New York Times this month as part of their Woodstock anniversary package, marking her debut as a bylined writer — ttps://www.nytimes.com/2019/
Historian was recorded in the spring of 2018 in Nashville and its filled with bracing realizations about life & death and tearful declarations of hard-won peace, expressed in lyrics that feel destined for countless yearbook quotes and first tattoos. Her sense of melody is wildly original, her compositions rich, full, and dynamic, and her insightful reflections belie her young age (24). Lucy’s way of looking at the world directly influences her songwriting — she prioritizes the personal and the political in equal doses, with a parallel poise, confidence, and sense of purpose in her playing. It’s a total knockout album … all killer no filler start to finish.
Listen to single “Night Shift,” which NPR, Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, Stereogum, SPIN, Consequence of Sound, Uproxx, and Paste have all called one of the best songs of 2018 — and is a tear-filled fan-fave sing-a-long at all of her live shows.
