Scheduling issues for the 31st annual festival required a change of dates, and organizers seized the opportunity to expand the former two-day event into a 10-day extravaganza with 27 different performances and events at various locations throughout Madison. This year’s focus will be on local and regional acts. There are a number of acts on the Memorial Union Terrace, a State Street “jazz stroll,” a concert highlighting jazz’s gospel roots, and another honoring women’s contributions to the genre. There’s also a world premiere from saxophonist Hanah Jon Taylor, Songs for the Emerging Man. Details: isthmusjazzfestival.com.
press release: Lynette’s Vocal Improvisational Group is a continuous exploratory journey into sound. The group has been meeting every other week for the past 18 months. With Lynette as the group’s leader/conductor, they will show how someone who has not been well versed as an accomplished jazz musician can create his or her own piece with the group. Every session is created anew, as we delve into the spontaneity of the moment. In performance, the group demonstrates the many possibilities of listening and singing in a communicative way. The audience is bound to be a part of the action.
Bio: After over 50 years of performing music, Lynette has tapped into her undeniable ability to share her wares. She’s been teaching voice and piano for the last several years. One of her passionate projects is the creation of Lynette’s Vocal Improvisational Group. Lynette’s first high-profile foray onto the local scene came in the mid-late 1970s as lead singer for the jazz-funk band, Four Chairs No Waiting. Since then, she has performed with jazz luminaries like Randy Brecker, Joshua Redman, Rufus Reid and Steve Khan; collaborated with many of Madison’s top jazz artists including Ben Sidran, Jane Reynolds and Gerri DiMaggio; and performed at Jazz at Five and the Isthmus Jazz Festival. As a leader, Lynette recorded the CD, Look for the Silver Lining, that includes her highly personal take on jazz and pop standards as well as Jewish liturgical music. The Vocal Improvisational Group is one of her current passionate projects.
