Madison Bach Musicians
Immanuel Lutheran Church 1021 Spaight St., Madison, Wisconsin 53703
press release: Remarkably, two towering geniuses of the Baroque era, Bach and Handel, were born in the same year, 1685, roughly one month and a little over 100 miles from each other. Yet they never met, largely because Handel spent most of his career in other countries like Italy and England. With this program we’d like to arrange a musical meeting… .
In this concert, we’ll explore the vocal and instrumental writing of these masters. The program selections will weave in and out of arias with violin obbligatos, instrumental chamber sonatas, and other works written for solo instruments. Both Handel and Bach wrote unforgettable melodies, with or without words, and they inspire us all. Featured works include selections from Handel’s Violin Sonata in F major, Nine German Arias, Lascia ch’io pianga, Tornami a vagheggiar and Bach’s Laudamus te (from B minor Mass), Öffne dich (Cantata 61), Ich bin vergnügt in meinem Leiden (Cantata 58), Prelude & Fugue in C major (Well-Tempered Clavier II), and the Largo from Violin & Harpsichord Sonata in C minor.
Madison favorite, soprano Chelsea Shephard, will return for this engagement! MBM concertmaster Kangwon Kim will perform solo and obbligato selections on baroque violin.
