media release: Continuing every 3rd Wednesday of the month, MJJ and MJS will hold a monthly series of Workshops followed by Jams at COPA, 2841 Index Road, Madison. This venue is located about 1 minute from the junction of the Beltline & Fish Hatchery Road.
The workshop goes from 6-7 pm, and the jam is from 7-9:30 pm.
March 20: The Workshop from 6-7, "How to Approach Jazz from the Roots Music," will be led by Mike Bezin (trumpet/ trombone), founder of Chicago’s West End Jazz Band. He will talk about early jazz, how to approach and recapture the roots of the music and ways to learn to improvise over it.
Please prepare by listening to and beginning to learn these 3 tunes from youtube:
1. Meccas Flat Blues (12 bar blues) here.
2. I Found A New Baby here.
3. Indiana here.
This will be another very special MJJ/MJS workshop with a world class musician. It's a unique opportunity, and if you're a musician don't miss it.
The workshop will be followed by an open Jam, from 7:00-9:00 with a great house band, Mark Ramirez, piano; Jim Huwe, percussion; and MJS President Laurie Lang, bass.
Please come and join us. There is no cover charge for this excellent music, but free will donations are encouraged. If you'd like to donate, but can't do so at the jam, here's a link to do so using our Donation site.
First Saturday jams continue at Cafe Coda, 1224 Williamson St., Madison, from 1-4 pm, led by area students. (Note, January's jam will be canceled as Coda is closed for the month.)
