A night after the Mallards offense matched a season-high in hits, the Ducks were unable to score a run until the 9th inning in a Tuesday loss to Rockford by a final score of 4-2.
After the Rivets were able to put a couple runners on board in the 1st inning, they were able to grind for two runs in the top of the 2nd against Mallards’ starter Kade Lancour (L, 1-2, 5.0 IP, 3 ER, 1 BB, 6 K) who put together a good start across five innings but was not given any run support in the loss. Rivets’ right fielder Cam McDonald slapped a two-run single to give Rockford the early lead. The Rivets were able to increase their lead to three with another run in the 4th inning on a home run from shortstop Brock Harding. The two clubs would sit at a standstill until the top of the 8th inning when Rockford added one more against Mallards’ reliever Tommy Ellisen on a homer. Ellisen struck out two in his lone inning of work.
The Mallards did not record a hit until the bottom of the 4th inning against Rockford starter Ty Rybarczyk (W, 4-1). Rybarczyk tossed seven scoreless innings before handing the ball over to the bullpen. The action for the Ducks came in crunch time. Bottom of the 9th inning saw Aaron Husson come into the game to try and clinch the contest for Rockford. Madison had their first three batters reach in the inning. Luke Fitton was then called on for the Rivets to earn a save. He first faced Scott Shaw and induced a ground ball that could have been turned for a double-play but the ball was dropped at second base to score the first run and keep the outs at zero. Fitton hit Payton Smith to score the other Mallards’ run. In the debut for Elias Stevens, he bounced into a game-ending double play to bring the game to a close, 4-2.
The Mallards are set to play two more games against Rockford on Wednesday (at home) and Thursday (at Rockford) to complete the season series with the Rivets from the Great Lakes East. Coverage can be found on the Northwoods League website under the ‘Live Action’ tab at 6:35 PM.
