media release: On Tuesday, Woodchucks’ first year manager Brock Moss earned his first Northwoods League win behind Wausau’s spectacular bullpen play and six total Madison errors.
For the second consecutive game to start the season, the Mallards jumped out to a 2-0 behind the patient bat of Jack Tucker, who walked two more times in the 6-2 loss at Athletic Park. Tucker scored both of the Mallards’ runs in the contest, one in the 1st inning and one in the 3rd, both on sacrifice flies from first baseman Owen Jackson.
The Mallards offense would go quiet from there, only getting one runner past first base the rest of the game. After Madison chased Woodchucks’ starter Christian Clack from the game, Wausau pitching combined for 6.1 innings pitched, four strikeouts and just two hits. Alex Breckheimer led the charge as the first arm out of the bullpen. The right-hander hurled five and a third innings of scoreless ball for the Woodchucks first win.
After 12 straight innings of shutout pitching to begin the year, the runs came in a bushel for Wausau. The Woodchucks plated four runs against Mallards’ starter Ryan Stefiuk in the bottom of the 4th. Eight batters came to bat in the inning and the first five reached base. After two runs had scored and Stefiuk’s sixth punch out to nab the second out of the frame, Woodchucks’ leadoff man Mike Adair slashed a two-run single to give the hosts a 4-2 lead, their first edge of the early season.
The Woodchucks would go on to add two more runs against Madison’s bullpen. One in the 6th inning and another in the 8th. The Woodchucks were given half of their runs on Mallards’ errors. Madison committed six total in the game and had two-multi error innings which hurt the team defensively. The Mallards botched the ball seven times in the opening series .
After the opening series split, the Mallards will host Fond du Lac at Warner Park to begin a home-and-home series with the Dock Spiders. Madison will be at home for one game before taking the road for six straight. First pitch from Warner Park is scheduled for 6:05 P.M.
