Since 2013, the summer solstice is a day that Madison musicians and music fans keep circled on the calendar for the return of Make Music Madison. June 21 becomes a day to celebrate music making by anyone, from seasoned pros to absolute beginners; this year a staggering 277 performers are signed up, and many are playing multiple spots throughout the day (Hoot'n Annie are playing a Herculean six sets!). Performances take place in parks, on street corners — maybe even your neighbor’s porch or yard — along with unexpected venues which don't normally host music such as Brothers Three and Fromagination. Find the Madison schedule at makemusicmadison.org. Other Dane County communities participating in 2022 include Middleton, Sun Prairie and Waunakee; find links at makemusicday.org/cities.

Who can host a performance? Whether you have a garden, patio, sidewalk, favorite city park, or other outdoor space in mind, it's easy and there's no cost to register or participate. Hosting is DIY and can be as simple as providing space on your sidewalk or as complex as renting a stage with a sound tech. Each host determines the location, length of time, and what they are able to provide. Performance spaces must be outdoors and within the City of Madison. You can bring the show inside if it rains. The space needs to be free and accessible to the public. All venues must maintain a 6′ clearance on city sidewalks for pedestrian passage. All participants must follow the most up-to-date Covid-19 orders from Public Health Madison & Dane County.
Who can perform? Students, amateurs, part-time professionals, and established artists are all welcome. There is no audition process to be included in the musical merriment. Make Music Madison is open to all ages, skill levels, and genres. All you need to do is register, match with a venue, show up, and perform! Even non-musicians are invited to participate in a sing-along with a crowd or organize a musical flash mob.
New Board Member for 2022: Acclaimed songwriter and musical performer Kristian Petrov Iliev joined the Make Music Madison Board of Directors. Known for his work under stage name The Racing Pulses, Iliev was elected in a January meeting to serve on the executive committee of the board as secretary. The Racing Pulses performed at Make Music Madison events in past years. Reflecting on what Make Music Madison means to him, Iliev said:
“I am proud to be a board member because I believe in the transformative power of live music, I understand many of the challenges this form of entertainment faces today, and I think music lovers and venues deserve opportunities to bring joy to our community.”
Iliev earned his bachelor’s degree in political science at UW-Madison. He is the author of a poetry collection Glyphs from the Apparatus and he works as the marketing manager of CODAworx.
Sponsorship Opportunities: Make Music Madison is looking for community and corporate sponsors for our 10th annual festival! This year we will be transitioning to reusable promotional materials including banners, tip buckets, and yard signs. This will lessen our environmental impact while providing higher quality materials. With this change comes a unique opportunity to join us as a presenting sponsor and lock in future promotional opportunities.
