Martin Carthy
press release: Martin Carthy, tagged by some as the “father” and guiding spirit of the English folk revival, will perform at Folklore Village on April 17, 2018. The concert begins at 7:30 pm, with doors opening at 7:00. Tickets are $15 in advance, or $20 day of show. Folklore Village is located at 3210 County Road BB, Dodgeville – about 40 miles west of Madison. This intimate venue will be the only opportunity to see Martin Carthy perform live in concert in Wisconsin.
Apart from being one of the most talented acoustic guitarists working the folk scene in the 1960s through today, Martin Carthy is also a powerful singer with no pretensions or affectations, and with an excellent ear for traditional compositions. He is as much a scholar as a performer, and frequently goes back to the notebooks of folk song collectors such as Percy Grainger, scouring them for fragments that could be made whole in performance. He sources material from the earliest known transcriptions and recordings of many of the oldest folk songs in England.
By 1966, Carthy was already an influence on other musicians. Says Paul Simon, “His guitar work was always clear and elegant, while his influence was widespread and profound.” Bob Dylan simply proclaims, “Martin Carthy is incredible.” In addition to his 10 solo albums, he has produced 40 more with collaborators Dave Swarbrick, Fairport Convention, Steeleye Span, the Albion Band, Brass Monkey, his wife Norma Waterson (of The Watersons) and his daughter, Eliza Carthy.
Martin Carthy’s awards include being appointed MBE by the Queen of England, and Folk Singer of the Year (twice) as well as a Lifetime Achievement Award from the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.
“Arguably the greatest English folk song performer, writer, collector and editor of them all” – Q Magazine
