press release: Melana Bass: Black Girl Everything is a gallery exhibition based on the contemporary, mythical journey of black girl magic. The exhibition explores societal perceptions told through the lens of whimsical black portraits. Bass utilizes multi-media, color and texture to explore elegance, beauty, self-love and pride. The black woman’s stories are told through giants and shape-shifters that use black girl magic to attain justice.
Black Girl Everything will also serve as an event that celebrates women of color throughout society, with live performances by female hip-hop, blues and spoken word artists.
Melana Bass is a senior at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She has been the recipient of the First Wave Hip-Hop Scholar Artist of the Year award and is a pupil in the BFA program. Bass has shown work both in her hometown of Chicago (cultural center) and in Madison, at the School of Education, Overture Center for the Arts and recently the Chazen Art Museum.
