press release: Legendary string masters Mike Marshall and Darol Anger are coming to Madison to perform together at the Wisconsin Union Theater. The two will be performing in the intimate Fredric March Play Circle at 8 p.m. on Thursday, October 13th 2016. Pricing is as follows: UW-Madison students are $10, Union Members and Non-UW Students are $20, UW-Madison Faculty and Staff are $21, general public is $24 and youth (18 & under) is $12. The two musicians first came together in a 1978 quintet and later co-founded The Duo.
Violinist, fiddler, educator and producer Darol Anger has been involved in numerous ensembles since 1977. These include Republic of Strings, Heritage, Psychograss, the Turtle Island String Quartet, the folk-jazz group Montreux, The Duo with Mike Marshall and the David Grisman Quintet where his “fertile inventiveness, surprising touches and technical mastery” was noted by the Boston Herald. He has collaborated and performed across the world the with artists such as fiddler Michael Doucet (the Grammy-nominated Fiddlers 4), the String Cheese Incident’s Michael Kang, Bill Evans, Béla Fleck, Paul McCandless, Edgar Meyer, Tony Rice, and Dr. Billy Taylor. In 2010 he was named an Associate Professor at the Berkley College of Music and he can be currently heard on NPR’s “Car Talk” theme music along with Mike Marshall, Earl Scruggs, David Grisman and Tony Rice.
Contemporary string musician Mike Marshall has a versatile skillset, mastering mandolin, guitar, and violin. He has performed with Edgar Meyer, Béla Fleck and Chris Thile, played Brazilian Choro music with Hamilton de Holanda, Baroque classical with German mandolinist Caterina Lichenberg, the Swedish group Vasen, the Grammy-winning jazz ensemble The Turtle Island String Quartet and with his bluegrass group Psychograss with Darol Anger, Tony Trischka, Todd Phillips and David Grier. Currently he presides over the School of Mandolin through the Artistworks company, teaching hundreds from around the world and can, like Anger, be heard on the theme for NPR’s “Car Talks.”
