media release: In 2023, Monona Farmers Market (MFM) celebrates 20 years of access to fresh, local produce in the Monona area. The market, open Sundays May 7 through October 29, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m, started in 2003. It’s known as a hub for access to local farmers’ produce such as herbs, vegetables, fruits, meats, and eggs, and local makers’ goods, including salsa, soaps, honey, tamales, breads, bakery items and more.
Families and Individuals are able to buy produce and other products with their Quest cards by conducting Electronic Benefit Transfers (EBT) at our market stall. EBT services are available at our market all season long.
What is SNAP? SNAP stands for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly called Food Stamps. SNAP is a federal program administered by the United States Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) in collaboration with state agencies. The federal government funds the program and sets eligibility requirements. In Wisconsin The Department of Health Services administers the program. The purpose of SNAP is to supplement the income of low- and no-income families and individuals so that they can better afford nutritious foods.
FoodShare Wisconsin was created to help stop hunger and to improve nutrition and health. Each month people of all ages who have a job but have low incomes, are living on small or fixed income, have lost their job, and are retired or disabled and not able to work across Wisconsin get help from FoodShare.
Community Action Coalition is thrilled to announce the return of its highly successful Double Dollars program for its milestone 10th year. Commencing on June 15 and running through October 15, this initiative presents customers in Madison and Dane County with an incredible opportunity to maximize their food budget while simultaneously supporting local farmers. The program, which originated in 2013 through a partnership between Dane County Farmers' Market, Community Action Coalition, Willy St. Co-op, the City of Madison, and Dane County, has grown to encompass a total of nine farmers' markets this year. Notably, two new additions, the Sun Prairie Farmers' Market and the Downtown Verona Farmers' Market, further enrich the program's reach and impact.
The primary objective of the Double Dollars program is to enhance access to and increase the purchase of nutritious produce for FoodShare recipients at local farmers' markets. By offering up to $20 of matched funds to be spent at the market, Foodshare participants can effectively stretch their SNAP/EBT benefits. Moreover, the program generates substantial support and expands the customer base for our esteemed local farmers who sell their produce at these markets.
Any individual who receives SNAP/EBT benefits can avail themselves of the Double Dollars program. Booths will be available at most farmers' markets in the greater Madison area, including:
• Dane County Farmers' Market on the Square
• Sun Prairie Farmers' Market (NEW)
• Downtown Verona Farmers' Market (NEW)
The Double Dollars program is made possible through individual contributions to the Community Action Coalition, donations to Willy St Co-Op, and the generous support of the City of Madison and Dane County.
