press release: The Madison Jazz Society will hold its annual year-end party, part of its year-long 35th anniversary celebration, on Sunday, June 9, from 12:45-4:30 PM at the Wyndham Garden Hotel, 2969 Cahill Main, Fitchburg.
Direct from New Orleans, special guest Chloe Feoranzo is a clarinetist and saxophonist who has been performing professionally since the age of 15. She is a freelance musician and full-time member of Shake 'Em Up Jazz Band and has been touring part-time with Postmodern Jukebox. Chloe will perform with the New Century Dance Orchestra and be part of the special jazz tap performance during the afternoon.
The New Century Dance Orchestra, which was scheduled to perform at the Society’s cancelled February concert, will provide music for listening and dancing. The band recreates the jazzy dance band sounds from the roaring twenties into the swing style of the 1930s. The ten-piece band is reminiscent of the Paul Whiteman Orchestra and the earliest music of Duke Ellington – the generation of “big band” music that preceded the swing era.
Also, during the afternoon, the Beautiful Friendship Double Trios (jazz tap dance & music) will provide a performance filled with history and innovation. Musicians and dancers will improvise, melody will sometimes be carried by a dancer and musicians will move to the music. Tap dancers will create the groove (or beat) while musicians produce the mood and melody. The double trio will be a mixture of these two art forms. Members of the Dance Trio are Katherine Kramer, Jenai Cutcher and Donna Peckett. The Music Trio members are John Becker, drummer and pianist, vocalist Sally de Broux who really shines when she sings jazz and Laurie Lang an MJS board member, jazz residency musician who works with elementary kids learning to “scat” jazz and middle school kids playing jazz on many instruments, as well as a jazz bassist who performs with various groups in the community.
The event is free and the public is welcome to attend. A short business meeting will be held at the beginning of the afternoon. Door prizes will be awarded throughout the afternoon. Doors will open at Noon. More information is available at www.madisonjazz.com or 608-850-5400.
Formed in 1984, the Madison Jazz Society is a non-profit, all volunteer organization formed to encourage the preservation of, performance of and education about jazz. The group awards grants to school music departments throughout Wisconsin to enhance their jazz education programs. The Society also conducts jazz residencies in schools in the Madison school district.
