press release: Concerts of fresh original music, in a great listening room, with no cover charge. That’s what fans will find at the UW Memorial Union’s beautifully renovated Frederic March Play Circle on four Friday evenings this Fall, as the Greater Madison Jazz Consortium, Madison Music Collective, and Wisconsin Union Theater present the fifth season of “InDIGenous Jazz,” a series of free concerts showcasing music composed and performed by local and regional jazz musicians. Each concert begins at 7:30 PM, and will include two sets of music and a brief Q&A with each evening’s featured performers.
November 4: Nuggernaut. Emerging from a jazz composers workshop, this popular local band formed in 2008. Nuggernaut specializes in groove-oriented jazz, fusion and funk. The band is in the midst of a long-running monthly residency at Alchemy, the Schenk’s Corners restaurant and live music venue, where their typical set includes new arrangements of an eclectic array of music ranging from Coltrane and Scofield to The Meters and The Roots, with some of their original compositions mixed in. For their fall 2016 InDIGenous concert, they will present a full program of original music from the catalogue they developed over the past seven years plus brand new compositions that will receive their debut. The band currently includes Jon Hoel, saxophone; Andrew Traverse, trumpet; Vince Faris, keyboards; Steve Radtke, keyboards; Ben Ferris, bass; Kelby Kryshak, drums.
