Opera on the Point
Whether you think you like opera or not, give Opera on the Point a try. Fresco Opera, the company that takes opera to unlikely stages — like suburban garages — has been mounting a yearly production of ghost stories paired with appropriate songs from various operas, in the circle at the tip of Picnic Point, complete with a roaring campfire. This year’s theme is “Into the Dark,” and organizers promise “strange creatures, legends, and encounters emerg[ing] from the woods.” It’s good fun. Park at the Picnic Point lot (Lot 130) and walk the mile to the end of the peninsula. There are some stone seats at the fire ring but it wouldn’t hurt to bring a camp chair (and a flashlight).
media release: Fresco Opera returns to Picnic Point for three nights of opera, fire, and mystery on the shores of Lake Mendota. As night falls, the audience gathers around the fire and the story begins. 7 pm, 9/24 & 26 and 10/3, at the tip of Picnic Point..
Opera on the Point: Into The Dark brings opera out of the theater and into the woods, where live music and storytelling unfold beneath the trees. Arias and ensemble pieces become part of a larger story filled with strange encounters, old legends, and creatures that emerge as the darkness closes in.
The woods become the scenery. The fire becomes the light. And the audience becomes part of the story.
Free and open to the community. Donations are appreciated and help Fresco Opera continue creating accessible and unexpected opera experiences throughout Madison.
