Please join us for the final lecture in our Spring Lecture Series: Ali Yaycioglu's lecture, titled "Order of Volatility: Wealth, Power and Death in the Ottoman Empire, 1450-1850." In this lecture, Ali Yacioglu examines the transformation of culture of power and wealth, as well as attitudes towards life and afterlife, in an insecure and highly risky political and economic environment, which was fashioned by confiscations and executions, from 15th to the early 19th centuries Ottoman order.
The Speaker:
Dr. Yaycioglu was born and raised in Ankara, Turkey. He studied International Relations at the Middle East Technical University, Ottoman History at Bilkent University, and Islamic legal history at McGill University. After completing Ph.D. in History and Middle Eastern Studies at Harvard, Dr. Yaycioglu carried out a post-doctoral study in Hellenic Studies at Princeton. He joined Stanford in 2011. In 2015-2016, Dr. Yaycioglu is on leave and visiting professor at L'École des hautes études en sciences sociales in Paris, Koç University in Istanbul and Humboldt University in Berlin.
