International Overdose Awareness Day
James Madison Park 622 E. Gorham St. , Madison, Wisconsin 53703
media release: Join Safe Communities Madison-Dane County, Momentum In Recovery, and the African American Opioid Coalition for International Overdose Awareness Day on Thursday, August 31, 2023. The event will begin at 5 p.m. at James Madison Park.
As part of the larger international effort, this year’s theme is “recognizing people who go unseen,” not only honoring those lost to overdose and drug poisoning and those grieving the loss of a loved one, but also healthcare workers, first responders and support services who help in crisis situations.
At the park, we’ll have a vendor fair with local resources; pick up naloxone, fentanyl test strips, and medication lock boxes. Ian’s Pizza will be providing – you guessed it – pizza! You’ll have the opportunity to send a thank-you message to the people on the front line of this crisis – healthcare workers, fire, police and EMS personnel. We’ll also walk from James Madison to the Hamilton Street corner of the State Capitol (at 6:30 pm) where speakers will share updates on how the opioid crisis is being addressed in Dane County and across the state, including legislative items to pay attention to.
