Painted Stones
to
Overture Center-Gallery III 201 State St., Madison, Wisconsin 53703
Works by female artists and rock painters will populate displays in the Overture galleries, which occupy entry hallways to the Capitol Theater on the first, second and third floors. In Gallery I, What We Inherit: Remnants of Light and Space, the whimsical portraits of Angélica Contreras and neo-Impressionism of Ellen Reynolds Hall, captures a variety of emotional expressions expressed in oil. In Gallery II, Strata offers a contrast in the mixed-media works of Hannah O’Hare Bennett and Gabrielle Raye Cordes. Gallery III’s Painted Stones (pictured) gives a variety of artists old and young the chance to display stones, known as “Kindness Rocks,” often left in public places as messages for strangers and passersby. Starting Jan. 11, visitors are invited to leave and find painted stones in Gallery III and throughout Overture Center in support of the exhibit. A class in stone painting will be given by artist Laurel Fletcher at 10:30 am Jan. 26 at The Bubbler in Central Library.

Gallery III – Painted Stones
Stone-painting has become a popular activity recently, driven largely by social media and the “Kindness Rocks” movement. Adults and children paint stones and leave them in public to be discovered by strangers, with the goal of spreading friendship and a sense of community.
Special events:
- Painted Stone Exchange: Bring your own painted stones to trade in Gallery III during the reception on Friday, Jan. 11. Visitors are also invited to leave and find painted stones within Overture Center for the duration of the exhibit.

Drop in for a stone painting workshop led by Laurel Fletcher. Workshop is free and open to the public. Stones and paint will be provided while supplies last.
