2026 Juror | Karen Irvine
Karen Irvine is chief curator and deputy director of the Museum of Contemporary Photography at Columbia College Chicago. She has organized over sixty exhibitions of contemporary photography at the MoCP and other institutions and written essays for numerous artist monographs and magazines. She received an MFA in photography from FAMU, Prague, Czech Republic, and an MA in art history from the University of Illinois at Chicago.
A message from Karen Irvine:
“I'll be looking for photographs with purposeful composition and skilled technique that slowly reveal a strong and personal point of view. In general, a photographer has just a few seconds to grab a viewer’s attention using style, composition, framing, color, and subject matter. Compelling images usually have a sense of mystery, layers of meaning, and ask more questions than they answer. In other words, they go beyond what they literally depict, and incite the viewer’s imagination.”
Workshops:
What a Curator Sees: How Photographs Get Attention: Friday, September 18, 2026, 9 - 10:30 am
Join Karen Irvine, chief curator and deputy director of the Museum of Contemporary Photography at Columbia College Chicago (MoCP), for a lecture exploring the evolution of collecting at MoCP over the past 50 years. Irvine will discuss how the museum has built and shaped its collection, highlighting key acquisitions by both established and emerging artists and considering what draws curatorial attention to particular photographs and bodies of work.
She will also share insights into her own professional practice, offering artists a behind-the-scenes perspective on working with museums, presenting their work, and curatorial decision-making.
