cancer,

• Advocacy by raising funds to support ongoing research.
Not long ago, ovarian cancer was referred to as the “silent killer” because it is so difficult to diagnose and even more challenging to treat. More recently, it’s being referred to as “the disease that whispers”. Researchers and gynecologic oncologists learned that there are subtle warning signs that may indicate the presence of the disease, even in the early stages when treatment is more likely to be successful. Ovarian cancer is the ninth most common cancer among women yet it ranks fifth in cancer deaths, accounting for more deaths than any other cancer of the female reproductive system. About one in every 71 women will develop cancer of the ovary.
The American Cancer Society estimates that there are approximately 22,280 cases of ovarian cancer diagnosed annually, with approximately 15,500 deaths. The Wisconsin Ovarian Cancer Alliance is working to improve those statistics through its work in the areas of education, support, and advocacy.
