Having a baby is a wondrous but also nerve-wracking event. While everyone hopes for a trouble-free delivery, premature births are more common than many realize — 10 percent of all American deliveries. Freelance journalist DiGregorio examines neonatology in her new book, Early: An Intimate History of Premature Birth and What it Teaches Us About Being Human (Harper). DiGregorio looks at early birth in the context of race, class, reproductive rights and yes, through a personal lens, as she herself was premature, and gave birth prematurely.
